Publication Ethics

The following is the code of ethics for the MAXIMA: Jurnal Pendidikan Matematika authors, editors, and reviewers, adapted from the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). This code upholds integrity, accountability, and scientific principles in research and publication, and must be followed by all parties involved in the publishing process.

Duties of Authors

  1. Reporting Standards:
Authors of original research must present an accurate account of the work conducted and provide an objective discussion of its significance. The underlying data should be represented accurately in the manuscript, with sufficient detail and references to enable replication by other researchers. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behavior and are unacceptable.
  2. Data Access and Retention:
Authors may be requested to provide the raw data related to a manuscript for editorial review and should be prepared to provide public access to such data if practicable, or retain the data for a reasonable period after publication.
  3. Originality and Plagiarism:
Authors must ensure that their work is entirely original. If authors have used the work or words of others, this must be properly cited or quoted. Plagiarism in all its forms is unethical and unacceptable.
  4. Multiple, Redundant, or Concurrent Publication:
Authors should not publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal or primary publication. Submitting the same manuscript to multiple journals simultaneously constitutes unethical publishing behavior.
  5. Acknowledgement of Sources:
Proper acknowledgment of the work of others must always be given. Authors should cite publications that have influenced the nature and foundation of the research being reported.
  6. Authorship of the Paper:
Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the study. All individuals who have made significant contributions should be listed as co-authors. Others who have participated in certain substantive aspects of the research should be acknowledged as contributors. The corresponding author must ensure that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the paper and have agreed to its submission.
  7. Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest:
All authors must disclose in their manuscript any financial or other substantive conflicts of interest that could influence the results or interpretation of the research. All sources of financial support for the project must be disclosed.
  8. Fundamental Errors in Published Works:
When authors discover a significant error or inaccuracy in their published work, they must promptly notify the journal editor or publisher and cooperate with them to retract or correct the paper.
  9. Hazards and Human or Animal Subjects:
If the work involves chemicals, procedures, or equipment that present unusual hazards, authors must clearly identify these in the manuscript. For research involving humans or animals, ethical approval and statements of informed consent must be provided.

Duties of Editors

  1. Fair Play:
Editors evaluate submitted manuscripts based solely on their intellectual content, without regard to the authors’ race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy.
  2. Confidentiality:
Editors and editorial staff must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher, as appropriate.
  3. Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest:
Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in an editor’s own research without the author’s explicit written consent.
  4. Publication Decisions:
The editorial board of MAXIMA: Journal of Mathematics Education is responsible for deciding which articles will be published. The decision is based on the manuscript’s validity, significance to researchers and readers, and compliance with legal requirements regarding libel, copyright infringement, and plagiarism. Editors may consult with other editors or reviewers when making publication decisions.
  5. Review of Manuscripts:
Editors must ensure that each manuscript is evaluated for originality and processed through a fair peer-review system. Editors should assign reviewers with appropriate expertise and avoid selecting those with potential conflicts of interest. The peer-review process must be clearly outlined in the author guidelines, specifying which sections of the journal undergo peer review.

Duties of Reviewers

  1. Contribution to Editorial Decisions:
Peer review assists editors in making editorial decisions and can also help authors improve their manuscripts.
  2. Promptness:
Any reviewer who feels unqualified to review a manuscript, or knows that a timely review will be impossible, should promptly notify the editor and withdraw from the review process.
  3. Standards of Objectivity:
Reviews should be conducted objectively. Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate. Reviewers should express their views clearly and support them with sound reasoning and evidence.
  4. Confidentiality:
Manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. They must not be shown to or discussed with others except as authorized by the editor.
  5. Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest:
Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Reviewers should not consider manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the papers.
  6. Acknowledgement of Sources:
